Qiblah direction in Quebec City
From Quebec City, the Qiblah is toward the southeast.
The southeast quarter
- Quebec City is north of Makkah, so the Qiblah is to the south.
- Quebec City is west of Makkah, so the Qiblah is to the east.
- Between the south and the east: the southeast quarter. This is what the scholars state for anyone between the north and the west of the Ka^bah.
How to find the southeast where you are
- East is where the sun rises, west is where it sets.
- At night, the North Star shows the north. When you face it, the south is behind you and the east is on your right.
- The southeast is between the south and the east. Face that quarter.
- A compass may be used to find north, south, east and west, away from iron and electricity. Numbers printed on a “qiblah compass” or shown by an app are not a proof.
Why does my phone say northeast?
Most apps draw the shortest route over the globe, which from North America leaves toward the north. That method was introduced here in the 1970s. The scholars set the qiblah by where a country lies from Makkah, not by the shortest route.
The office of the Shaykh of al-Azhar answered: the northeast line is usable for traveling to Makkah, “but not in taking it as the Qiblah.”
